Honing and superfinishing stones

Honing stones are used in three main applications.

  1. Short stroke honing – most common application is honing of bearing tracks (ball and roller). Usually, a vitrified bonded aluminium oxide stone is used as a pre-hone, followed by a silicon carbide stone to achieve surface finish. Typical surface finish achieved is 0.05 μm Ra, with stock removal of 2-3 μm. CBN and diamond qualities are also available for this application.
  2. Long-stroke honing – most common application is the honing of cylinder liners and bores for engines. The honing stones are usually glued or clamped to a honing head. In addition, the application is often used for the honing of pipes in the oil and gas industry and hydraulics.
  3. Thru-feed superfinishing – most common applications are the superfinishing of cylindrical/taper roller bearings, piston pins and bearings. In addition to improving the surface finish, this process is also focused on improving workpiece geometry.
