Understanding Surface Grinding Segments and Their Applications

Segments are often used for grinding large flat surfaces, due to the grinding machines grinding head (several segments in one head) enabling a large grinding contact area. The shape and number of segments in a head vary depending on machine capabilities.

Common segments used for this application consist of aluminium oxide, vitrified bond, in hardness from D to H and grit size of 24 to 54.  Ceramic grain is often used for heavy stock removal applications and can achieve a high G–ratio (ratio of material removal to segment wear).
