Abrasives for Grinding Metal

Every foundry creates its own unique range of metal products and castings for use in a large variety of industries. To create the best quality metal products for the market, each foundry needs top-quality abrasives for grinding metal. Having the right abrasives not only maximises your output but creates better quality products and reduces overall costs. Here is our guide to finding the right abrasives for grinding metal.

Choose the Right Abrasive

To determine which abrasive product is best for metal grinding, consider three objective measurements:

  1. The time it takes for the abrasive product to complete its work.
  2. The amount of material that needs removing in a single job.
  3. The wear of the abrasive product after use?

To find the right product for your intended purposes, you need to hold one of these measurements constant and measure it against the other two. For example, measuring how much material was removed and also how long it took once the abrasive has worn away. Alternatively, measure the time it took and the abrasive wear after the removal of a certain amount of material.

Abrasive Methods for Metal Products

  • Cutting – This is the process of removing unnecessary material from the metal product using a cutting tool. This can be done by hand-operating a cutting tool or by a machine using cutting discs made from tough materials such as ceramic alumina.
  • Brushing – This method uses abrasive products to remove surface imperfections and create a uniform surface. This involves an abrasive belt or wire brush with rounded edges perpendicular to the grain.
  • Polishing & Buffing – These methods reduces the roughness of the surface to micro inches to create an ultra-smooth surface. Polishing also helps increase a metal product’s lustre and overall aesthetic qualities. There are a number of products that can be used for this such as honing & superfinishing stones. see the full range of polishing and superfinishing products in the products section of our website.
  • Grinding – By using abrasive wheels such as diamond grinding blades, grinding machines help smooth out the surfaces of metal products. This can range from common surface grinders for creating a smooth exterior, to special die grinders with shaped abrasive wheels called mounted points.
  • Deburring – This process removes burrs which are small imperfections in the metal product after the welding process. An abrasive tool such as our tungsten carbide burrs will scrape and grind the burrs off the metal product to make it smoother and more reliable.
